Although not a groundcover as the name implies, this rugosa is more compact than most roses of this type. It's a tough, hardy rose that blooms heavily in early summer with good repeat throughout the season. Flowers are reddish-purple, semi-double and wonderfully fragrant. The crinkly green foliage resists just about everything, including salty seaside conditions. Bright red rose hips in the fall are an added bonus. Rose hip tea, anyone? Hardy in Zone 3.
